The Science of Your Sniffer
Familiar scents, including bad scents, are deep-seated in our brains. Smell triggers memories and emotions. There’s no avoiding reactions to smell; it’s all in our biology.
"Smell and emotion are stored as one memory." Dawn Goldworm, co-founder of “olfactive branding company”, 12.29 (https://1229scent.com/)
“Smell and memory seem to be so closely linked because of the brain’s anatomy”, said Harvard’s Venkatesh Murthy, Raymond Leo Erikson Life Sciences Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.
The Olfactory Bulb, located in the front of the brain, sends signals to the limbic system, including the amygdala and hippocampus, responsible for both emotions and memory.
To sum it up, your brain quickly connects familiar scents or fragrances with your emotions and/or past experiences, including negative ones.
